Sifnos

Sifnos is an island of 74 square km in the western Cyclades. A well watered and fertile island with easy slopes is guarded by steep cliffs, broken by only a few deep-cut bays. It lies between Serifos and Milos at 80 nautical miles (130 km) from the port of Piraeus.

The traditional whitewashed houses speckling the mountainsides, the innumerable churches crowning every peak, the old stone walls, terraces following the contours of the mountains, the ancient stone paths and stairs winding between them, the olive trees and the orchards, all bathed in the most amazing, clear sunlight will leave you speechless; the clearest, bluest water of the sea, the softness of the beaches and the incredible vistas to the other islands floating in the distance will take your breath away; the warmth, simplicity and hospitality of the local people, with their seemingly timeless rhythms and habits, will make you feel not only welcome but also invited to share a life and a place you can call your own.

The essence of Cycladic architecture. A string of three whitewashed villages, anchored by the capital Apollonia, sit like pearls along the crest of the island, perfect example of the architecture of the Cyclades. Also, the 235 white churches and monasteries with their blue domes dotted all over the island, perched on almost unreachable rocks and peaks, are beautiful expressions of the local architecture.

Take pottery lessons. Pottery on Sifnos dates back to 3000 BC – a true heritage that still survives to our days. The rich deposits of clay, the abounding water and the strong sun provided the raw materials, while the skillfulness of the potters ensured the production of a series of utensils used throughout the centuries. In many of the 16 pottery workshops scattered around the island, you may arrange for a private class of pottery. The local artisans will teach you the basic skills of pottery and will guide you through the stages of creating your own work of art.

Take a boat trip to a nearby island. There are many islands close to Sifnos which you may want to explore for a day. The trip will take you less than an hour by private boat and you will be guaranteed an unforgettable swim in crystal clear waters.

Eat, eat, eat. The basic ingredients of your gastronomic experience are simplicity, freshness and deliciousness. “Revithada”, the famous chickpea soup, chickpea balls with garlic, fresh grilled or fried fish, meat cooked in the mastelo (a utensil made of potter’s clay), the local cheese and their macarons are only few of the delicacies you will enjoy.

Last, but not least, enjoy swimming in the Aegean. Swimming in Sifnos is an experience you will always cherish. The island is surrounded by crystal clear waters that take all the shades of blue imaginable – from turquoise to deep blue, the fresh water is a real treat for anyone who loves to swim. The beaches with their taverns serving fresh fish and lots of local delicacies will be your home for most of the day. The tamarisk trees will offer their welcome shade when the sun is high and the breeze will lullaby you to perfect oblivion.
