Santorini

Modern day Santorini owes its dramatic natural beauty to one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in history, which took place in about 1600 B.C., at the same time when the Minoan civilization ruled over the Aegean Sea. The blast created a gigantic underwater caldera as half of the island’s mountainside fell dramatically into the sea, thus giving birth to the myth about the lost city of Atlantis. While several still-simmering volcanic islands have emerged from the caldera waters through the millennia, the opposite side of the island is packed with black-sand beaches inviting for a revitalizing dive into the crystal blue sea.

For the athletic guests, there are marked walking and hiking trails that run alongside the caldera and offer magnificent views and breath-taking sunsets. When at the beach, there is a wide range of activities we can arrange for you, including scuba diving, canoeing, water-skiing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling (SUP).

Do not miss the opportunity to explore Santorini from the sea. Your options range from whole day trips on larger cruise boats, to short trips on sailing-yachts or tailored excursions on private motor-yachts. You will be safely navigated to secluded bays, mineral hot-springs or the volcanic rock island Nea Kammeni, while being catered to with local delicacies and spirits. Let us plan what fits you best.

The island will appeal to all types of travellers, from those who wish to explore by hiking or kayaking, to archaeology enthusiasts, beach lovers, gourmet eaters and wine connoisseurs. Or simply to those who wish to sit-back and enjoy the luxury of their hideaway.

Take a guided tour through one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece, the excavated Minoan city of Akrotiri abruptly abandoned by its residents about 6,000 years ago and frozen in time by the volcanic eruption, a site often referred to as the “Bronze Age Pompeii”. Round up your historical experience by visiting the museums in the main town of Fira: The Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Ancient Thira (the original name for Santorini), where the brightly-coloured wall frescoes that survived the destruction of Akrotiri are displayed.

Insider’s tip: In spring time, during the Good Friday celebrations of the Greek Easter, the picturesque village of Pyrgos is lit up by hundreds of self-made beacons placed on the rooftop of every house in the village. Take the opportunity to experience this fantastic event and become part of the traditional rituals of the local culture.

Food is a main ingredient of the Mediterranean lifestyle and as such it is gloriously celebrated in Santorini’s award-winning venues, led by the world’s most renowned chefs, as well as in local taverns offering fresh fish and traditional dishes. Whatever you are looking for we will guide you to the island’s best restaurants. Owing to its volcanic soils, wine tradition in Santorini dates back to the ancient times and during the Venetian rule the island exported some of the most expensive wine in Europe. Today, Assyrtiko, a citrus and mineral flavoured white wine, and Vinsanto, a sweet dessert wine, both made from the indigenous grape varieties of Santorini, continue to fascinate wine lovers. We urge you to take a tour in one of the island’s vineyards and indulge in a mesmerizing trip of wine-tasting accompanied with local delicacies.
