Villa Keros, Koufonisia

Lying east of Athens, Koufonisia are a cluster of islands {Ano (Upper), Kato (Lower) Koufonissi & Keros} of the Small Cyclades in central Aegean, south east of Naxos & west of Amorgos.

There are two proposed explanations for the origin of the name of the island. According to the first, Koufonisia was the ancient name of the gulf between Koufonisia and Glaronisi. The full name was “Koufos Limin”, which means lee port, where ships can anchor. According to the second version, which is supported by Manesis, this name was chosen because of the large number of caves and sediments that are found on the island. Anthony Miliarakis, in contrast with these two theories, wrote in his book in 1920 that Pano Koufonisi was known as “Fakousa” and Kato Koufonisi as “Pino”.

The peace and quiet; the Aegean sun; the unrivalled beaches, from the most beautiful in Greece, with golden sandy stretches and turquoise waters; the small bays; sea caves; the abundance of fresh fish; all make An0 Koufonisi  island the gem of the Aegean giving promises of unforgettable holidays away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist traffic.

Even not more than 6 km wide, you can find everything you need. In the village you can find shops, markets (open from 8:00 a.m. to 23:30 p.m. every day) and many taverns. Also, in the east side of the island in some beaches there are taverns and beach bars. Captains Prasinos Kostas and Roussetos organize daily excursions to the island’s beaches and nearby islands (Kato Koufonissi, Glaronissi, Keros and Schoinousa). You can always travel daily to Schinoussa, Herakleia & Naxos to have more excursions.

Few cars! Thanks to the small distances, most of the visitors prefer to stroll or use a bike in order to discover the island’s unique natural beauties and the scenic alleys of Cycladic architecture. A real jewel at the center of the Aegean!

The eastern side of the island is adorned with many charming beaches with golden sand or pebbles and the landscape is completed with small deserted bays lined with sand and cave-forming rocks. Some of the beaches have taverns and beach bars that organise parties at nights with a full moon. The waters are of unrivalled beauty! Don’t hesitate to discover the natural beauties and the xerophyte landscape of the Cyclades by strolling along the natural footpaths of the island.

Kato Koufonissi is almost uninhabited. It features only a handful of houses, beautiful beaches and a quaint tavern famous for its fish soup. Don’t forget to taste it!

Uninhabited Keros is a protected archaeological site. A large number of ancient Cycladic art pieces have been excavated in the 20th century at the most imposing manmade structure in all the Cyclades archipelago.

Landmarks

The island’s museum, which is going to be housed in the old school’s building, will be open soon. Its exhibits will be findings that date from the prehistoric period until now. Keros is an archaeological site, a sample of the Cycladic civilization and culture. Eminent statuettes, symbols of the Cycladic civilization, the Piper and the Harpist, which are now exposed at the Archaeological Museum of Athens were discovered on the island.
