From this courtyard you can also access our new state of the art air-conditioned gym. Three of the bedroom suites, Gaia, Chara and Limoni are also on this level. Villa Armata

Spetses is a beautiful and cosmopolitan island in the Saronic Gulf with a long history and a remarkable nautical and cultural tradition. The landmark of the town is Dapia Port with its famous square and the statue of Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroine of the Greek war of independence in the middle of it.

The island played an integral part in the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman rule and the subsequent birth of the modern Greek State. When the Greek Revolution broke out in 1821, Spetses was the first of the Greek islands to raise the flag of the Revolution on the morning of April 3 1821 in the church of the patron saint, St. Nicholas, located in the old harbour.

Every year, the second weekend of September is dedicated to commemorating the events of the battle of September 8 1822 in which the Turkish flotilla was torched. In combination with the feast of the chapel of Panagiá Armáta (the Madonna-in-arms), near the lighthouse the events culminate in a re-enactment of the burning of the Turkish flagship in the harbour. Even today, most traditional fishing boats and sea-taxis hoist the blue and red flag of the revolution. The blue signifies freedom and the red signifies blood, along with the words “Freedom or Death”.

There are many wonderful historical sites and towns to visit and Spetses makes a great base for island hopping, including to the nearby famous island of Hydra. Other nearby destinations include Porto Heli, Ermioni, Poros, Nafpilon and the castle town of Monemvasia.

With no cars allowed on the island and just seven taxis you can travel the traditional way, by horse and carriage into town. There is also a bus service and various boat trips to the beaches around the island. The best thing is to hire a motorbike or ATV and take the circular car-free road around the island, stopping at the many beautiful beaches and tavernas on your way. The scenery along the 26km route is truly stunning!

Those with more energy can cycle or run the route – which is exactly what people do every year for the Spetses Mini Marathon. Don’t forget we have a selection of bikes for use during your stay.

Another enjoyable activity in Spetses island is hiking. Many old footpaths cross the island and lead to tiny chapels, small settlements, secluded beaches and hilltops with breathtaking view to the sea. Hiking is best in autumn and spring when the weather is not so hot. In summer, long hiking can be quietly uncomfortable.
